This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It hooked me with the first note and never let up. The bass synth used is absolutely amazing.

As a consumer, it hits all the things I look for. Darkness comparable to Coil’s lunar phase and tones reminiscent of Throbbing gristle. Hypnotic and heavy but restrained and intentional.

As an artist, this is my reference album. The dynamics and separation of the layers are what I personally shoot for and use this extensively when producing Favorite track: The Order Collapses.

about

"Californian sound designer and musician Nathan Moody adds to an already impressive catalogue of dark, expansive electronic music with this new album. It finds the artist creating an immersive, and often oppressive, suite of tracks where glints of light only occasionally push through the cracks...And there is a definite feeling of falling into the void here, a sense of urgency and unpredictability that can only really be achieved through the artist losing himself in the moment."
-TONESHIFT

"A masterclass in dark ambient"
-ANDRULIANBLOG

“Shades” is Nathan Moody’s darkest, most experimental, and least compromising release to date. Performed live with synthesizers and the occasional loop from tape or a pedal, with no formal sequencing, and sent through guitar amplifiers, “Shades” is a dark electronic experimental odyssey like no other.

This work’s oppressive bass and screaming howls evoke sinister forces and a cinematic narrative. There is no timing grid, no sync, only performative structures that are intuitive and impulsive. Only the occasional loop accompanies the live performances that make up the layers of each song. As always, this work resists easy classification: more dynamic and expressive than dark ambient, noisier than drone, more structured and melodic than noise.

This horror movie of an album may unnerve, but its intensity and intricacy invites the listener to complete its underlying story and unusual structures. Adventurous psychonauts will be richly rewarded by this sonic journey.

Limited edition of signed and numbered cassettes includes a tin case with real claws.
