A Shadow No Light Could Make

precenphix The album’s cover image is apt, setting the stage for the feeling of falling backwards into the void. Home made instruments bend and creak, vibrating contact mics as the artist’s hands guides you through a set of minimalist, dark ambient recordings. Aching tones leap from the physical release’s swirled 180g vinyl, taking you on a fateful night’s journey before setting you down again, when it is realized it was all a dream. Favorite track: First Dream.

Kittydropper (bridge) The sounds here come from a dark, beautiful pre-natal world of signs, sigils and rituals whose meaning seems long decayed.. like Hermann Kopp meets Martin Stig Andersen… just the kind of thing I love. Favorite track: Awoken.
Lost Tribe Sound
Lost Tribe Sound thumbnail
Lost Tribe Sound There is a twisted sort of cinematic fantasy aspect to this new Nathan Moody record, first time collaborating with the likes of William Ryan Fritch and many others… loads of handmade instruments, heavy clashing metals, and an endless barrage hard-to-place recording techniques. An intense, walloping experience.

Mark Kilborn This album is a sonic journey. Nathan has an incredible ability to create unique moods with the most curious timbres. I love it. Favorite track: Watched.

about

"A work of cinematic reach and breadth, the latest from Nathan Moody employs strings & synths & heavy atmospheres to build worlds." -Bandcamp

"Unforgiving, merciless, and laden with suspense, each individual work is designed to raise sensations of wonder, surprise, and visceral fear." -On the Fringe of Sound

"Listening to A Shadow No Light Could Make, one is invited to draw comparisons to existing works of music and art yet despite this the album carves out its own unique space. Black and white, light and dark, loud and quiet, harmony, melody and threnody are woven together as one into a startling tapestry of sound." - Igloo

"A Shadow No Light Could Make" finds Nathan Moody at his most dramatic and darkly cinematic. It’s also the first album for this traditionally solo artist that features contributing musicians. Strings, human voice, and extended techniques bring the listener into a dimly lit and eerie world of tension, danger, and beauty.

Traditional instruments are blended with found-object percussion, prepared acoustic instruments, guitar, electronics, and instruments that Moody has constructed himself. Formal structure and experimentalism collide to create sweet yet broken melodies, and sour yet beautiful harmonies. This album represents a bold step forward for this ever-evolving artist, and asks the listener to imagine their own narrative for the proceedings.
